big, hairy, audacious goal

Why your business needs a big, hairy, audacious goal

We all know the value of goal-setting. If you want to achieve something, you set a goal and you work towards it until you achieve it.

Especially for businesses, setting goals helps to measure success and allows you to continue improving what you do.

But if you want to really drive change in your business, we challenge you to swap out your regular, SMART goals for big, hairy, audacious ones – even if they seem impossible to achieve.

Why? Glad you asked!

You’ll push yourself harder

Goals let you know exactly what you’re trying to achieve and how hard you need to work to get there.

So what happens when you set really achievable targets? You’ll probably cap your efforts when that goal becomes a reality.

Big goals, on the other hand, encourage us to work harder.

Consider goal-setting for your business. If you go in with the mindset that you’re happy to make enough sales to break even, then you’ll likely only work as hard as you need to achieve that.

But what if you went in with the objective of making 300% of the sales from the previous year?

You’d probably work a lot harder to ensure you’re able to get there. And even if you never actually achieve your big goal, having pushed yourself harder will ultimately lead to better results.

You’ll accomplish more

Setting yourself a big, hairy, audacious goal will generally lead to greater accomplishments. Why? Because the harder you try, the more you’ll achieve.

That’s not to say you’ll always achieve your big goals. But setting an aspirational target and working hard to get there will always lead to greater results.

Imagine this in terms of onboarding new clients for your business.

If you were to set yourself a goal of onboarding 2 new clients, you’d probably get there pretty easily and feel good about achieving that. But if you were to set yourself a goal of 20 new clients, sure you might not get there. But hitting a mark of 5 or 10 new clients would be far better than if you had only aimed for 2.

You’ll realise your business potential

The only way to understand your potential is to push yourself harder to see just how much you can achieve when doing so.

Throughout the process of pushing yourself harder, you’ll achieve more. And through achieving more, you’ll also get a better idea of what is possible when you try. And when you realise what’s possible when you try, you’re more likely to put this into practice again and again in other aspects of your business.

Essentially, knowing that you can work harder and accomplish more when you do puts you in the mindset that anything is possible.

Ready to set your big, hairy, audacious goal?

Setting yourself outlandish business objectives is a really effective way to see how much you can achieve. And if you don’t hit the mark, remember that you shouldn’t feel disheartened, but instead excited about how much you were able to stretch yourself.

It should also motivate you to set other aspirational goals and discover what the outcome could be if you do this again and again.

Ready to smash those big, hairy goals? We’d love to be part of the team to make that happen!
