How to discover your brand personality

How do you talk to your customers if you’re not even sure what your brand stands for?

Just like humans, brands must have a personality to be appealing, and must have consistency if they want to be trusted and valued by their customers. Think about the people you love and the attributes that make up their personality. More than likely, words such as funny, generous, strong, smart, witty, reliable and sassy could be used to describe them. Successful brands have distinct and recognisable personalities that drives their marketing strategies and client interactions.

How to discover your brand personality

Write down ten words that clarify the appeal of your brand. Consider the following points:

  • What do you offer your customers? What problems are you trying to solve for them?
  • How do you communicate with customers? What language do you use? Are you funny, relaxed, professional or casual?
  • What do customers value about your business? What do you value about it?
  • What is your point of difference from competitors? How do you deliver a solution differently?

The answers will help reveal the strengths (and weaknesses) in your brand, and will act as the building blocks for you to start creating all elements of your brand, whether it be logo design, stationery, website design or product prototyping.
